FY 2017 Tokyo Culture Program Grant: Support for Overseas Cultural Projects

Business Overview
In the run-up to the grand performance of 2020 in Tokyo, the British Council has teamed up with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and Japanese professional musicians to launch Discovery for 2020, a collaborative project to increase access to the arts for all. In June, as a preliminary stage of the project, a lecturer from Shape Arts, which works to improve access to culture and art in the UK, was invited to participate in training on "Disability and equality, accessible event management and inclusive practices" for Japanese musicians and hall staff. This was followed in August by London Symphony Orchestra workshop leader Rachel Leach, who conducted skills training for Japanese musicians to lead creative music-making. The Japanese musicians who participated in the training and the musicians of the LSO will work together, and under the facilitation of Rachel Leach, a total of six creative music-making workshops will be held in August and September with children of junior orchestras, children with no experience of playing musical instruments, children with disabilities, and elderly people. The results of these workshops will be presented in front of an audience on September 29 in conjunction with the London Symphony Orchestra's performance.

London Symphony Orchestra
Founded in 1904, the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) is renowned for its outstanding performances as one of the world's leading symphony orchestras. In addition to providing great music to audiences around the world, the company has positioned learning at the core of its mission, and since the launch of its educational program Discovery in 1990, it has been providing music to over 60,000 people annually, from young children to the elderly. In 2008, they launched a creative program called "LSO On Track" for children in East London, the home of the LSO and the home of the Olympic Games. At the London Olympic Games in 2012, young musicians and band members from LSO On Track performed together on the stage at the opening ceremony, creating a sensation.
