FY 2017 Tokyo Culture Program Grant: Support for Overseas Cultural Projects

Business Overview

In 2018, the world-famous percussionist Terje Easingset visited Japan 4 times in winter, spring, summer and autumn, and stayed in Tokyo for about 40 days. He searched for materials unique to Tokyo that had not been noticed before as materials for sound, made them into musical instruments, and held concerts as a place to show them. They will research rocks that can be extracted in Tokyo, such as black diamond from Kozushima, which is said to be one of the highest quality rocks in Japan, raw stones of Hachijo stone from Hachijojima, and gravel from the Tama River. In Okutama, he seeks materials found in forests, such as wood and bamboo, as well as deer bark. In the city center, he uses field recordings to capture the sounds of the city that cannot be captured by human ears. The biggest goal of this project is to discover the "sound of Tokyo" by encountering unknown materials in the process of searching for materials in Tokyo.
