FY27 Term II Creation Grant [Single-year grant program]

Business Overview
This project "VACANT VERNACULAR," scheduled to start in 2016, will hold an exhibition in Tokyo by artists working in different cities around the world. In addition to exploring the internal changes that occur when an artist moves from overseas to Tokyo, and the differences in interpretation given to works there, we will also enhance the sensitivity of audiences by continuously developing works created in various cities with the theme of "the uniqueness of the place," and reinterpret the correlation between "place" and people's "thoughts." During the exhibition, workshops will be held with artists as a place to verbalize each person's awareness of "cities" in the world. By archiving the results of these activities, we aim to comprehensively capture the thoughts of people who confront "expression" centered on Tokyo, and to create an environment in Tokyo where "artists," "audiences," and "the city (as a stage for the presentation of works)" inherent in "expression" can build an ideal mutual relationship.

Profile
VACANT is a free space consisting of 2 floors that opened in Harajuku, Tokyo in May 2009. There is an event space on the second floor and a gallery, shop and bar space on the first floor. In order to become a place where something is created by meeting people, we are constantly creating a place as a free space. Since its opening, it has been planning and producing events and exhibitions that are independent and not bound by genre, and has played a part in developing a new culture scene in Tokyo. This project, curated by VACANT, introduces Berlin-based photographer Kristen Rochert, Tel Aviv-based filmmaker Amit Barlowitz, and Oita-born photographer Yuko Noguchi.
