Business Overview

The shamisen is a typical Japanese musical instrument that is indispensable for traditional Japanese performing arts such as kabuki and ningyo joruri. It is widely used as an accompaniment instrument for songs and narrations, from folk music to art music, and has developed with different musicalities depending on the region where it originated and the place where it developed. Focusing on the diversity of shamisen music, this performance compares Nagauta from Edo, Gidayu-bushi from Osaka and Jiuta from Keihan, and introduces the differences in tone and rich instrumentality of each shamisen to fully convey the great appeal of Japanese music to American audiences. It will be the first North American performance of Living National Treasure Female Gidayu-bushi, Komanosuke TAKEMOTO, and will feature leading performers such as Yasukazu FUJII of Jiuta, who won the Minister of Education Award for Fine Arts and Music this year.
