This foundation was established in 1976 to commemorate the achievements of Chihiro Iwasaki (1918-1974), a picture book artist, and to conduct activities that contribute to the development of picture book culture. In 1977, the world's first art museum specializing in picture books, the Chihiro Iwasaki Picture Book Museum (currently the Chihiro Art Museum Tokyo) was opened on the site of Chihiro's home and studio, and in 1997, the Chihiro Azumino Art Museum was opened in Nagano Prefecture. It collects, displays, preserves and researches works of outstanding picture book artists from Japan and overseas.
