"Margins of Surplus: Monozukuri Culture and the Life History of Tokyo Shitamachi" Exhibition

Business Overview
What is "monozukuri"? This project focused on the history and culture of small factories in the Katsushika area, and developed an art project that questions the social meaning of the act of "making" things. In recent years, basic technologies developed in small factories in downtown Tokyo have attracted renewed attention, and various measures have been taken to promote and pass on these technologies. However, while the basic technology of "monozukuri" has been reevaluated in this way, the lives and cultures of the workers who supported the development of the manufacturing industry on the ground have not been sufficiently examined. On the other hand, this project focused not on the "manager" of a small factory but on the "employees" who had worked there, and explored various aspects of the culture born from "monozukuri" by paying attention to their life culture. Performance performances, exhibitions, and workshops were held based on the results of the research, and the possibilities and issues surrounding the junction of "research" and "art" were viewed.
