採択概況[PDF]
◆Number of applications (adopted): 435 (70)
< Music >
◆ Number of applications (number of applications): 94 (18)
Breakdown: artistic creative activities in Tokyo 76 (15) international artistic exchange activities 18 (3)
There were 94 applications, of which approximately 60% were first-time applications. Applications by activity stage were mainly from businesses in the expansion and development stage. Although the number of applications from businesses in the early stages of establishing a base for activities was only about 1/4 of the total, the number of applications was the highest. The largest number of applications were in classical music, including contemporary music, with applications in a variety of genres, including jazz, improvisation, and sound art. There was also a growing trend toward cross-cutting initiatives that influence each other across genres. This grant covers individual applications and international art exchange projects, and emphasizes support for the activities of young and mid-career people. We are looking forward to applications that show new ideas in performance and expression methods, as well as information on international venues.
"Theater Field"
◆ Number of applications (accepted): 151 (20)
Breakdown: Artistic Creation Activities in Tokyo 141 (17)
International Art Exchange Activities 10(3)
The 151 applications were the second highest ever recorded in the first fiscal year of 2024, which was 160 cases. Looking at the breakdown of applications by activity stage, about half were in the stage of forming their activity foundation. Startup Grant was selected, and among the businesses that applied for this year's subsidy, four have been selected. In the field of theater, there are many applications for performances of works that depict relationships with close people and distortions in social structures, leaving viewers room for reflection, and there is also an increase in activities that organize talk segments aimed at dialogue with audiences after performances. Projects that concretely reflect unique perspectives and methods in creation, projects that seek to renew creative activities without fear of change, and projects intended to elevate the scale of activities to a new stage have been selected.
"Dance Division"
◆ Number of applications (accepted): 19 (5)
Breakdown: Artistic Creation Activities in Tokyo 12(2)
International Artistic Exchange Activities 7(3)
There were 19 applications, 5 were selected, and the acceptance rate was about 26%. About half of the activity stages were in the expansion and development phase. Applications for diverse forms of expression such as contemporary dance, butoh, flamenco, and oriental dance are accepted, and performances that continuously present works and explore unique forms of expression are selected. Additionally, last year's overseas performances led to new invitations for international arts exchange activities, which were selected. The selected revival projects clearly demonstrate the intentions and initiatives behind the revival, and are expected to serve as opportunities to further deepen the work. We look forward to applications from young people who will move on to the next stage after Startup Grant, as well as applications from festivals and other events.
< Art and Video >
◆ Number of applications (number of applications): 60 (7)
Breakdown: Creative art activities in Tokyo 40 (2)
International art exchange activities 20 (5)
60 applications were submitted and 7 were selected. Initial applications were 42, accounting for about 70%. As for the activity stage, more than half of the total, or 37, were in the expansion or development stage. Applications were submitted in a wide range of fields, from art and video to video, film, architecture, photography, crafts, textiles, calligraphy, jewelry, etc. There were several applications on the theme of AI. Four of the selected projects were held in Asia, including South Korea, Taiwan, and Thailand. Many of the projects held in Tokyo were international art exchange activities, including projects by artists from Japan, Germany, and Switzerland. The projects include workshops, research, and dialogue with participants, and focus on the process leading up to and after the exhibition. Please note that in the visual field, activities that produce, distribute, and perform films are not eligible for subsidies.
[Traditional Performing Arts]
◆ Number of applications (number of applications): 40 (14)
Breakdown: Creative artistic activities in Tokyo 32 (11)
International artistic exchange activities 8 (3)
The number of applications was 40, which was a record high for the 1st term, matching FY 2023. Of these, 23 were first-time applications, accounting for about 50% of the total. By activity stage, there were 13 applications in the activity base formation stage, 16 applications in the activity expansion/development stage, and 11 applications in the activity maturity/top stage. There was no significant bias toward any particular stage, and a certain number of applications were received from each category. There was a wide variety of events, including traditional Japanese music, noh, Japanese dance, entertainment (rakugo), and gagaku. The number of applications was 14, with an acceptance rate of 35%. Businesses with specific medium- to long-term visions and promising future prospects were selected as well as businesses with both innovation and continuity, such as those rooted in the essence of tradition but with new ideas and collaboration with other fields. There was also an increase in the number of applications for international art exchange activities this year compared to the previous year, and three were selected, including a project to hold a performance and workshop by a kabuki musician in the UK.
<
>◆ Number of applications (number of applications): 71 (6)
Breakdown: Creative artistic activities in Tokyo 59 (4)
International artistic exchange activities 12 (2)
This year, 71 applications were submitted and 6 were selected. We received a wide variety of applications unique to multiple fields, including cross-genre projects combining various fields and immersive art projects using digital technology and video. However, projects that do not meet the screening criteria because it is difficult to predict the specifics or feasibility of the project were not selected. Projects that are expected to be international and original were selected, such as recreating a previously acclaimed work into a full-length work, or collaborating with overseas artisans to complete a work in a workshop by participants.
