“The real thing is for life”: For Children Encountering Traditional Performing Arts for the First Time
The full-scale hands-on program "Traditional Performing Arts for Kids," hosted by Tokyo, the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture Arts Council Tokyo, and the Japan Association of Performing Arts Performers (Geidankyo), has reached its 19th edition this year, and so far, more than 5,200 children have become familiar with traditional Japanese performing arts.
In this project, leading performers of noh, nagauta, sankyoku, and Japanese dance will give direct instruction, and the results of several months of training will be presented on full-scale stages in the National Noh Theater and Asakusa Public Hall. Through“Genuine Experience”, we create a place where children, who will lead the next generation, can learn the essence that will not change even in a time of continuous change, and grow spiritually by experiencing the sensibilities and manners that have been cultivated in the world of traditional performing arts, as well as the spirit and spirituality that have been handed down from ancient times.
There are two programs: a standard program for students from elementary school to high school, and a youth program for junior high and high school students. In addition to two training sites in Shinjuku Ward, Chiyoda Ward, and Nakano Ward, the training will be held at a total of eight cultural facilities in Tachikawa City, Chofu City, Higashimurayama City, and Musashino City in the Tama region. It has spread to various areas in Tokyo and aims to provide opportunities for children of all ages to participate.
