[Call for Participation] Creative Wellbeing Tokyo | Sign Language Interpretation Training Program in Arts and Culture

Put your sign language interpreting skills to use in museums and theaters.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture Arts Council Tokyo are working to improve the environment for the realization of a society in which everyone can enjoy art and culture, taking advantage of the World Athletics and Deaflympics to be held this autumn. As part of this effort, we will continue to hold the "Sign Language Interpretation Training Program for Arts and Culture" in fiscal 2024.

After completing the course, we expect students to participate in guided tours and workshops at Tokyo Metropolitan Cultural Facilities and other art museums, to watch plays at theaters and halls, and to play an active role in supporting the participation of sign language speakers in art and culture.

Training content

Training will be delivered in lecture, group work or workshop format.

  • ① Improving sign language interpretation skills
    Strengthening knowledge of sign language interpretation theory, preliminary preparation for sign language interpretation, listening/reading interpretation skills, and arts and culture
  • ② Promoting an understanding of what sign language speakers who are active in the field of culture and art expect from interpreters
    Understanding the culture of sign language speakers and ensuring their ownership when working together

8 training sessions from 10:00 to 15:15 (including breaks)

Target audience

Students who meet the following two conditions will be selected through screening (documents and interviews).

  • Persons with experience, interest or interest in sign language interpretation in the field of art and culture
  • A sign language interpreter or a person with the same level of ability as a sign language interpreter
