[Event] START Box EXHIBITION vol.6

"START Box" rents out studios at affordable rates to young artists using vacant stores in Tokyo public housing and public housing.
With the cooperation of Yurakucho Art Urbanism YAU, "START Box EXHIBITION vol.6" will be held to introduce the works of 11 artists working at START Box.
In addition to the exhibition of works, there will be an opening event and a talk by artists with facilitators. Please come and see us.

"The Spider and the Broom" Public Lecture: Why Is Criticism Necessary?

Takuma Ishikawa, the director of "The Spider and the Broom," and Takanao Seki, an art critic, gave an open lecture. The first half will be a lecture at YAU STUDIO, and the second half will be a tour of the START BOX EXHIBITION venue.

Session I

Toru ISHII

He was a dyer. In 2014, he completed the Doctor of Fine Arts Program at the Graduate School of Fine Arts, Tokyo University of the Arts. While reconsidering the traditional Japanese dyeing technique of itome yuzen-zome, he will create dyed paintings with themes of "innovation in traditional crafts," "criticality of modern art," "digital and analog," "modern ukiyo-e," "time," and "consciousness." Main solo exhibitions are Sokyo Atsumi (Tokyo, 2024), main group exhibitions are Sapporo International Art Festival 2024(Museum of Modern Art, Hokkaido, 2024) and JAPAN: Myths to Manga (Young Victoria and Albert Museum, London, 2024). His works are also stored in the University Art Museum, Tokyo University of the Arts, the Museum of Modern Art, Hokkaido, Morikami Museum (Miami), and the Victoria and Albert Museum (London).

Sachie Kiko

He was born in Kagawa Prefecture and raised in Osaka Prefecture. He graduated from the printmaking course of the art department of the art faculty of Osaka University of Arts and completed the printmaking field of the art major of the doctoral course of the art graduate school of Kyoto Seika University. Motifs are parts of the human body and foreign fragments of daily life. He works mainly in the two methods of painting and woodblock printing. His solo exhibitions include (GALERIE SOL, 2025), (Otsu Gallery, 2021), and (DEP GALLERY FUKUZUMI, 2019). He was selected for the "8th YAMAMOTO Tei Print Grand Prize Exhibition" (2021) and won the "5th Asago Art Competition" (2016). Works are housed in the Asago Geijutsu no Mori Art Museum.

Yuuri KITSUYA

Born in 2001 in Hirosaki, Aomori Prefecture. The subject is how to build a relationship with the self with otherness that exists in such memories, based on the premise of the present contradictory situation in which one is haunted by the past that one remembers as a fact but does not realize and the cry from the past that comes suddenly. It uses multiple representations, including photographs, images, and installations, with reference to multiple layers of memory from interviews with family and friends, local culture, and research into memorable places. Major exhibitions include (Tokyo Zokei University, 2025) and (euso gallery, 2025)

Kotomi SATO (Kotomi SATO)

Born in Akita Prefecture in 1999. Graduated from Akita Public University of Fine Arts Graduate School of Mixed Arts. He carries out research, projects, and productions based on the original coined word "Koyogaku," which creates a margin for shifting the perception of everyday things (things that are taken for granted). Major exhibition history, solo exhibition "Beyond the words, invalid"(BIYONG POINT, 2024), (Meitokukan Building, 2024), etc.

Moeko Sato (Momoko Sato)

Born in Yamagata Prefecture in 1992. After graduating from the Department of Elementary Education at Tsuru University, he studied drawing after working experience. 2023: Graduated from Musashino Art University, Correspondence Division, Oil Painting Course. Currently, she uses colored pencils to reconstruct her works on the screen while observing colors, lights, and shapes based on everyday scenes. He has received awards for the "World Art Grand Prize Exhibition" (2023 and 2025), being selected for the "Ueno Royal Museum Grand Prize Exhibition" (2024), the "New Artist Award Debut" Encouragement Prize (2026), and being selected for the "Showa Kai Exhibition" (2026).

Session II

Azusa KOBAYASHI

He was born in Yokohama City. In 2021, he completed the doctoral course in oil painting at Tokyo University of the Arts. His main motifs are things that connect distant places, such as hair, strings, plant roots, and mazes. He created paintings and installations on the theme of "separation" and "connection" of meaning. Starting from the correlation between image and meaning, it aims to visualize unknown relationships by connecting known things. Art Plaza Grand Prize (2013), Art Award Tokyo Marunouchi Jury Prize (2015). Major solo exhibitions: "Welcome to Honeycomb Utopia" (Tokyo Wonder Site Hongo, 2013), "Network or Operation" (MEDEL Gallery, 2019), "Map of the World" (Gallery Q, 2025)

Noseyui

After completing a degree in Western painting at the University of Tsukuba, he worked in the flower industry. He is interested in the shape and growth of plants, vegetation, and topography. With themes of plants, devotion, and vitality, he creates paintings using language expressions in parallel with manga. 2025: Selected for 'The 43 Ueno Royal Art Award Exhibition.'.

Fukamieri

The people I try to depict are fragmentary memories of the world, time, living things, the wind and the sea, sometimes men, sometimes women, sometimes mermaids and birds, and they exist everywhere, changing their forms like grains. As fundamentally changing creatures, each of us is an atypical entity that differs from the gender and race defined at birth, and the identity that emerges from this is reunited through sharing. We are not "bodies with souls" but "souls with bodies." The accumulated layers of life (the universe), which are stones, soil, bones, and blood that represent the human form but contain the activities of life, are the possesions of the soul.

FUJIWARA no Ayame (also known as FUJIWARA no Ayame)

Born in Miyagi Prefecture in 2001. In 2024, he graduated from the Department of Oil Painting, Faculty of Art and Design, Musashino Art University. Graduated from the university in 2026. From his aversion to linear things, he started to produce with a modified panel. They doubt the uniqueness of the human brain as a subject that is easily brainwashed. His major solo exhibitions include (HENKYO, 2026) (GALLERY SCENA, 2025) and (Shimokitazawa Arts, 2024). He won the Musashino Art University Graduate Production Excellence Award (2026), the University Graduate Production Excellence Award (2024), and the CAF Award 2022 Kenjiro Hosaka Jury Prize in 2022. His works are also collected by the G foundation.

Rui MINEMURA

Born in 2000 in Nagano, currently lives in Saitama. Graduated from Tama Art University, Faculty of Fine Arts, Production Design Department, Product Design Major. He creates works that use variable structures of “swirls ” and tools with ambiguous behavior, creating“ swirling situations ” that create exploration, trial, and hesitation. Aiming to create an opportunity for people to rediscover their own senses and the relationship with the world around them, the core of his practice is bricolage, which picks up existing values and weaves them into new relationships. His major awards and exhibitions include the JID AWARD 2025 NEXTAGE Division Encouragement Prize, winning entry in the Craft City Takaoka 2025 Craft Competition, winning entry in the SICF26 and GOOD DESIGN NEW HOPE AWARD 2024.

Yuna Wada (Yuna Wada)

Born in Tokyo in 2002. He graduated from the Graphic Arts Department at Tokyo Metropolitan Technical High School and from the Oil Painting Department at Tama Art University. Through the use of paintings and installations, he has constructed a mechanism to promote a reawareness of "common things" hidden in everyday life, and a mechanism to draw concepts such as death and salvation, which are objects of awe and worship, into a familiar touch.
