The Karok Reading Club is a place for people to sit around a record of past disasters and related expressions (Movies, paintings, plays, memoirs, novels, etc.) and talk about their thoughts and feelings.
This time we will take up "Oe Mitsuo Selection" (Shoshi Kankanbo).
Oe Mitsuo (1906– 1991) was a poet who participated in the proletarian poetry movement and, after turning to poetry, published war poems during the war. After the war, he deepened his philosophy of listening to the voices of others living in different circumstances and seeking mutual understanding through dialogue, through exchanges with residents of a sanatorium for leprosy patients and the compilation of a joint poetry collection, "The Sprout of Life.".
In this event, Tetsuya Kimura, the editor of "Oe Mitsuo Selection" (Shoshi Kankanbo), Dai Fujieda, the editor in charge, and Natsumi Seo, the artist who wrote the book review, will introduce the book and talk about Oe Mitsuo's poetry. Then, we will read Oe's poetry with the participants, listen to it freely, and talk about it.
In these times, when disasters are occurring all over the world and people from diverse backgrounds are meeting more and more, why not revisit the life and works of Mitsuo Oe and consider the possibility of meeting and communicating with different people?
Participants are not required to have a copy of the Oe Mitsuo Selection in advance.
People who have never been exposed to poetry are welcome to participate. Please join us.
