At metote-lab, various projects are carried out under the theme of cultivating a natural culture composed of visual language. To further explore the potential of visual language, since 2024 we have been launching the "Mette Study Series" to showcase the appeal of sign language.
This series teaches the basics of CL expression (Classifier Expression), broadens the range of expression through small group work, and deepens each individual's CL expression.
For the 4th edition, we welcome Yumiko Kawai, a freelance deaf actor who has appeared on various stages and holds workshops nationwide, as a guest lecturer. This is an opportunity to think about CL expression through the physical expression of deaf people and to make new discoveries.
CL expression is a linguistic technique within sign language languages that visually expresses the structure, movement, state, and relationships of objects by skillfully utilizing "form" and "space." Unlike Japanese, which conveys words side by side, CL can visually convey things as if overlaying sign language, giving it the power to directly bring to life the "world as seen by a person."
This time, starting from body expression, together with Mr. Kawai, we will re-examine everyday movements and discover the possibilities of expression within everyday movements. Through the workshop, the usual ways of using the body and seeing things will change, and it will serve as a catalyst to broaden the range of expression.
