Outline

This concert series has two objectives: to showcase tradition and creativity in shakuhachi music. Tradition means ensuring the orthodox transmission of Tozan-ryu shakuhachi music, and creativity involves creating new shakuhachi music.

The concert brought together professional musicians affiliated to Tozan-ryu and featured Nomura Hozan – a Living National Treasure and musician active on the frontlines of shakuhachi music – as musical director. The aim of this concert series is to pass down the basic performance style for the original Tozan-ryu honkyoku (repertoire), and to revitalize creative activities for shakuhachi through the performance of musical pieces unveiled during the Meiji era through the Showa period. The second concert in the series offered performances in unison of solo parts from the Tozan-ryu repertoire, and the revival of shakuhachi works from the 1970s by shakuhachi composers. Through this, Take no Shinsengumi has been able to conduct research on the reorganization of small ensembles into large ensembles and give musical performances.

At the same time, through these activities the aim was for Take no Shinsengumi members to become leading shakuhachi players and instructors in future in terms of both Tozan-ryu shakuhachi and shakuhachi music in general, as well as to further showcase the appeal of shakuhachi and make shakuhachi music more familiar to people.

Profile

Tozan-ryu Shakuhachi Hozan-kai Take no Shinsengumi
The Tozan-ryu Shakuhachi Hozan-kai held a concert series with the theme “the sound of bamboo,” winning a special award at the 2018 Nagoya Citizens’ Art Festival. The organization used this as an opportunity to select members from within its ranks who work as professional musicians and young musicians with aspirations to do likewise. Take no Shinsengumi was formed in 2020 as a new Tokyo-based group hoping to showcase the appeal of shakuhachi music with the two-pronged objective of “passing down the original Tozan-ryu repertoire” and “creating new shakuhachi music.” In 2023, its members won 1st to 4th places at the 47th national Tozan-ryu honkyoku contest.
