  • Organization : Institute Ichinokai
  • Section : None
  • Type of Grant Program : Single

Outline

In this performance at a Noh theater, seeing people, people who have trouble seeing and people unable to see can all enjoy the sound of classical language via Japan’s very own traditional performing art traditions, Noh and Kodan. The performance shows an encounter between Tokiyori Hojo, the Shikken (regent) of the time, and Sano Genzaemon Tsuneyo in the Noh masterpiece “Hachinoki” (“Potted Trees”). In Noh performed by Kanze style performer Keigo Suzuki and kodan storytelling by a kodanshi (professional Kodan reciter), Teikitsu Ichiryusai, Institute Ichinokai explores the world of “Hachinoki” from which “Iza Kamakura!” (“time to go to Kamaura”), a well-known phrase which sums up the samurai spirit, is said to originate.
