Performing at this concert were six musicians with disabilities that directly affect their ability to play instruments or sing (for example hemiplegia, arm/upper body injuries, and aphasia.). They showcased unique music using unconventional methods, including a flutist unable to use her left hand who plays an instrument modified for use with her right hand only, and a pianist who does not have the use of her left hand and plays with her right hand only. For the performers, it was an opportunity to perform and interact with fellow musicians in similar situations, regardless of musical genre. At the same time, the event was designed to promote recognition in society of the need for improving accessibility vis-a-vis musical instruments, as well as to widely communicate the simple beauty of music carrying limitations.
Onehand MUSIC Groove
This organization started up in 2022 under the slogan “Disability won’t stop the music!” and is aimed at exploring barrier-free activities in the field of music. While probing needs that will encourage the development of musical instruments and assistive devices that can be played with one hand, the group looks at the possibilities for “para-music” by collaborating with professionals in different fields including instrument makers, engineers/technicians, and composers. OMG organizes concerts aimed at giving musicians with disabilities a forum for mutual exchange and interaction as well as raising societal recognition.
