Event features
One-on-one lessons giving people of all ages an accessible experience of the appeal of shamisen music. We will provide careful instruction on etiquette and Kimono dressing so that even first-timers can join in with confidence. Each session lasts 45 minutes, with individual lessons tailored to the individual’s schedule, and conducted at participants’ pace. Parent-and-child discount available. We also offer lessons for people accompanied by children. Participants will showcase what they have learned in a performance with instructors at the end of the program.

Publicity methods for the recruitment of participants (collaboration, cooperation, networking, etc.)
We will widely provide and distribute information by collaborating with the local Akasaka merchants’ association. We will get groups/organizations related to Japanese culture such as Japanese dance schools and kimono stores to put up flyers to attract participants. We will ask Dentou Geinou Shinbun (a newspaper on traditional entertainment) to publish program recruitment information.

Ways to enable participants to continue with practical skills experience (other than programs covered by this grant) after the end of the event
After the course, we can introduce those who want to continue learning the Shamisen as a hobby to suitable instructors, depending on individual needs and conditions. If you join our association, you can take advantage of flexible practice times and a shamisen rental service

Profile

The Kisaragi School of Shin-nai
Shin-nai Joruri is a performing art originating in the Edo period, in which stories are told and sung to the refined sound of the shamisen. The Kisaragi School practice room is a three-minute walk from Akasaka Station in Minato-ku. It is a place where everyone from young people to seniors can learn about classical performing arts in an enjoyable and sociable environment. While participants enjoy their experience of the shamisen and Uta singing, they can also receive a solid learning foundation in these arts. Participants can also gain firsthand experience of the “Shin-nai nagashi” seen in Japanese historical dramas, in which performers walk along playing the shamisen. This could be you, so come join!
