The first musical version of a masterpiece first performed on stage in 2012 by Theater Company Caramelbox. The consistently well-regarded play has attracted audiences totaling more than 50,000 people at ten venues across Japan. Playwright Yutaka Narui handled the script, direction, and lyrics for the musical version. Narui, who has a slew of theatrical works under his belt, has also had a hand in theatrical productions of the work. The music, featuring some beautiful and wide-ranging songs, was composed by Yuji Sugimoto. Sugimoto is the former vocalist of the piano-based rock band WEAVER and currently works on his solo project ONCE. The protagonist Christian is played by the talented actor Soichi Hirama, who continues to appear in many popular productions. The Watcher, who has the key role of keeping close watch over Christian, is played by Caramelbox’s Naoto Tada, who has played Christian three times in the straight play version. The musical version took the work in a new direction, with a splendid cast of leading lights from the world of musicals sharing the stage with popular actors from Caramelbox.
