This project started with the phrase, “I wanted to learn sign language.” In addition to a discussion on whether it’s necessary to convey sign language via audio guides, a workshop was held where visually impaired individuals and audio guide creators experienced sign language expressions. The footage from the workshop, along with a performance video of “The Restaurant of Many Orders” that was produced after the workshop, was screened with accessibility support, followed by a feedback sharing session after the screening.
Monogatari Group☆Polan no Kai
Since 2004, this company has been delivering the message of “living” through the works of Kenji Miyazawa. Along with its creative and performance activities, the company aims to contribute to local communities by creating an environment where all people can enjoy art and culture. Focusing on the reading of Kenji Miyazawa’s works, it presents stage productions that blend various artistic genres. Since 2014, they have incorporated audience support for the visually impaired, such as audio guides and stage explanation sessions, into their performances.
Since 2019, they have continuously produced and presented projects that use expressions through “sign language,” “music,” and “narration,” allowing people with hearing and visual impairments, as well as everyone else, to enjoy the performances in the same space. From that point on, they have been striving to create a creative environment led by individuals with visual and hearing impairments. In addition to their own universal productions and performances, they also work to raise awareness of audio guides, subtitles, and sign language interpretation through lectures and other activities.
