Outline

This event commemorates the first anniversary in September 2024 of the demise of “Iegekijyo,” a 90-year-old traditional kominka Japanese house in the Senju neighborhood of Tokyo’s Adachi-ku which operated for six years as a much-loved local creative space. Under the concept of exploring community/creative activities that can be continued without the physical space of a building while at the same time preserving and passing down the venue’s history, the event featured an exhibition, talks, tours and workshops, with a focus on dance performance.
Choreographed and directed by Yo Nakamura, the performance recreated the work “Living with cozy home,” which was performed 90 times at Iegekijyo over a three-year period, replicating the entire original performance space.
The venue not only acted as a theatrical space for the performance, but also hosted an exhibition created with artists in a variety of genres.
While visitors enjoyed the artistic offerings, additional programs gave them the opportunity not only to think about Iegekijyo, but also about the creation of environments/places, and issues of legacy and working in specific locales.

Profile

Iegekijyo Once Upon A Time Project
The aim of this “once upon a time” themed project is to preserve and pass on the eventful history of Iegekijyo, a 90-year-old traditional Japanese house in Kita-Senju, Adachi-ku, Tokyo, a building which has been used as both a home and a theater. Project members organize events and activities in the hope that these will provide an opportunity for visitors to reflect on and take into consideration the changing aspects of life (the deceased, buildings, neighborhoods, objects, relationships, etc.).
