What we do

Street Piano Sumida River 2024

  • Organization : Monten
  • Section : None
  • Type of Grant Program : Single

Outline

The purpose of this initiative is to plan and implement events enabling Sumida-ku residents as well as people and artists living in the Sumida River basin to engage with art and interact with each other on an equal footing. The event is aimed at attracting not only music lovers but also those who have no musical skills, in particular families with small children who have limited access to the arts; organizers therefore put particular emphasis on publicizing the event to schools and other child-related facilities. Moreover, the aim is for locals to not only perform but also be involved in the planning and running of the event, developing it into something proactively created by residents themselves.

Profile

Ryogoku Monten Hall
General Incorporated Association Monten (Ryogoku Monten Hall)
After its opening in 1989, Monnaka Tenjo Hall staged an ambitious and varied program of music and performances with the aim of offering a high-quality experience of art and fostering a broad audience base, oscillating between the two poles of “tradition and modernity.” In 2013 it moved to Ryogoku and changed its name to Ryogoku Monten Hall to reflect its standing as a new art space. The venue operates by leveraging partnerships with artists from various genres and local communities. It creates new forms of culture by constantly holding experimental events.
