Based on William Shakespeare’s “King Lear”, “Lear’s Lament” is a story about loss and destruction which meticulously depicts a family feud. This play also attempts to tell us what Japanese have sacrificed and gained during the process of Japan’s civilization by setting the story to Japan in the Meiji era. Kaneko Iwasaki, 92 years old, who has been acting since the dawn of Japan’s theater plays the role of Lear (in this case Sei Muroshige) and is joined by backbones of “Haiyuza” including Atsushi Saito and Mayumi Araki, and young members of the company with high expectations for the future. “Lear’s Lament” perfectly embodies Haiyuza Theatre Company’s annual theme which is “Connecting with our predecessors and viewing the present”.
