OSBC conducted a self-organized seventeen-person European tour with the cooperation of Oslo booking agency No Earplugs. The tour comprised sixteen musicians from OTOMO YOSHIHIDE SPECIAL BIG BAND plus one manager. In addition to the avant-garde compositions Otomo is known for, the band also performed a range of music, from unique improvisation conducted by members themselves to bon odori and performance of soundtrack music. The band’s distinctive and unique style was well-received around the EU, with most venues selling out. The band also held a workshop at Cafe OTO in London and closed the 60th Jazzfest Berlin as the headline act. The tour subsequently led to the band receiving plenty of attention, including being approached by other festival organizers, and featuring in various media including radio and online.

Composing the music for the NHK drama program series “Ama-chan” led Otomo Yoshihide to gather musicians from diverse fields such as classical music, pop, jazz, rock and improvisation and form OSBC in September 2012. In 2013 he performed music from “Ama-chan” at NHK’s annual NYE TV music program Kohaku Uta Gassen, and won numerous awards. The band subsequently produced numerous albums, performed in bon-odori dance events across Japan including in Fukushima, held workshops with the general public and children, appeared at Fuji Rock and the Sapporo International Art Festival, and performed at various live music venues; OSBC now stands at the core of Otomo Yoshihide’s distinctive post-Fukushima Earthquake projects, which range from avant-garde music to soundtracks and music for bon-odori.
