In pursuit of the social function and possibilities of dance performance spaces, Arche continues to question the nature of interpersonal relationships as well as the meaning of the dancer’s own existence through physical expression. This work themed around the concept of the Homunculus Map put forward by neurosurgeon Wilder Penfield focuses on touch, a sense which is deeply connected to the brain. As we can see from Braille, handcrafting, etc., the sense of touch has been an important element enabling people to connect with each other. However, with the development of technology, opportunities for physical interaction are decreasing; and in the world of today in which indirect connections through symbols and words have become mainstream, there is even a tendency to avoid direct engagement with others. This work is an attempt to use our contemporary “lack of a tactile sense” as the basis for a physical perspective, and to reconsider our ethics as living organisms by returning to the senses humans are born with.
