Outline

“Shibuya Noh,” an initiative that began in 2019, acts as a training ground for the next generation of Nohgaku performers in the hope that audiences will continue to support working performers for a long time to come. Transcending the boundaries of the five schools of Noh, Shibuya Noh carries the 650 year or so old tradition of Nohgaku into the present day.
This performance enables audience members to feel more connected to Nohgaku, expanding the scope for enjoyment and appreciation of Nohgaku performances, and broadening audience members’ understanding of the artform.
The project’s third performance in 2024 features a performance of the Noh play “Motomezuka” in which a woman is proposed to by two men at the same time, and unable to come to a decision, she takes her own life. Even after she descends into Buddhist hell, she is tormented by the ghosts of her two suitors – who have killed each other – as karmic retribution. Burning in hell fire, she asks a traveling monk to help her find salvation.
