Outline

The 25th Tokyo FILMeX international film festival was held for nine days from November 23rd to December 1st at the Yurakucho Asahi Hall and Human Trust Cinema Yurakucho. 25 feature-length films were introduced to Japanese audiences, focusing on the latest works by Asian filmmakers who have made a name for themselves at film festivals around the world. The Grand Prize in the Competition section went to APRIL, directed by Georgian director Dea Kulumbegashvili, and SANTOSH, directed by British/Indian director Sandhya Suri, won the Special Jury Prize and the Student Jury Prize. In addition, MONGREL (co-directed by Ying Youchao), made in Taiwan by Singaporean director Zhang Wei-liang, won a Special Mention, and the Audience Award for the entire program went to AN UNFINISHED FILM, the latest work by renowned Chinese director Lou Ye, who served as a jury member in the Competition section. Additionally, from November 15th to 21st, a pre-event called “A Cinematic Journey on the Silver Screen: 25 Years of TOKYO FILMeX” was held at Human Trust Cinema Yurakucho, screening a total of six films.

The festival showcases a wide variety of creative works in the categories such as the Competition section, which introduces outstanding up-and-coming Asian filmmakers, and the Special Screenings section, which showcases new films by renowned filmmakers pioneering the cutting edge of cinema.
