Genuine traditional performing arts are a lifelong treasure: for children encountering traditional performing arts for the first time

The traditional performing arts of Japan abound in valuable ideas and experiences that provide a source of inspiration and strength for children going out into the world.
Around 4,300 children have participated in this hands-on training program that offers children unprecedented contact with traditional performing arts.
In this the 16th year of the program, we are once again offering surprising and exciting experiences in genuine traditional performing arts.

Participation fee

15,000 yen

*Additional costs: about 10,000 to 20,000 yen (covers purchase of/usage fees for teaching materials, musical instruments, stage costumes, etc.) Costs vary depending on the course. Detailed information will be provided in the “Course Procedure Guidelines” sent to prospective participants.
*Your participation fee cannot be refunded if you decline or cancel participation after paying the fee via bank transfer.
Conditions for participation
-All dates can be attended on time
-Must be able to attend the rehearsal and performance
-In the case of children in third grade of elementary school and below, a guardian or guardian’s representative must be able to bring them to and pick them up from the lessons.
-Must be able to cooperate in publicity activities related to the project, including:
*Press coverage/photography/filming for news reports, documentation and publicity carried out by the organizer and individuals/groups recognized by this organizer.
*Publication/broadcast of limited personal information and photos/video footage in media outlets created and released in relation to this project (including TV, newspapers, magazines, the internet, SNS and DVDs).
*In principle, participants will be informed in advance when an activity receives media coverage.
-Please note that photos of participants in this project may be provided through online photo service. (Viewing and downloading are limited to the participants only.)

Application period
Saturday, July 1 – Thursday, August 10 2023
*Application must be received by Thursday, August 10.

*Participants will be decided by lottery in the case of over-subscription.
*All applicants will be notified of the results of their application. (Please note that this may be undeliverable due to spam handling etc.)

Program procedure

  1. Application: Deadline Thursday, August 10.
    →You will receive a reply by email confirming receipt (auto-reply).
  2. Notification of results: We will inform all applicants around Thursday, August 24(If there are too many applicants, a lottery will be held).
  3. Participation procedure: Applicants will receive a “Certificate of Participation” when they return the form and pay the participation fee (via bank transfer) by Thursday, August 31
    (If the payment date is missed, the offer will become invalid. An additional lottery will then be held among the unsuccessful candidates).
  4. A “lesson launch” opening ceremony will be held at the National Noh Theatre on Saturday, September 17, 2023.
  5. Lessons: Participants will take lessons from September through March with professional performers as their instructors.
  6. Public performance: Wednesday(Holiday), March 20, 2024: Nohgaku (Hosho Noh Theatre), Wednesday 27 March 2024 or Thursday, 28 March 2024: Nagauta/Sankyoku/Nihon Buyo (Asakusa Publicl Hall

Notes

-Program details are subject to change or cancellation due to the outbreak of natural disasters, etc.
-Lesson times cannot be specified.
-Only one application is valid per participant. Applicants may not participate in multiple courses.
-If the number of first choice applicants exceeds capacity for any of the courses, participants will be decided by lottery among first choice applicants only.
-If the number of participants for any of the courses is less than the prescribed number, we may not offer those courses.
-As a rule, administrative communication during the implementation period will be carried out by email (if necessary, notification may be sent by post).
-In order to ensure the smooth running of group training, absences and late arrivals/leaves will be strictly controlled and dealt with. Depending on the circumstances, we may ask you to cancel your participation, including presentations.
-If there is any negligent handling of musical instruments/apparatus, participants will be responsible for the costs of repair.
-Program organizers shall not be held liable for accidents or such like that may occur on the way to and from lesson venues or performance venues.
