This year, Tokyo Metropolitan Government and Arts Council Tokyo (Tokyo Metropolitan Foundation for History and Culture) initiated the Next Creation Program with the aim of enabling children to engage in deeper learning at a higher level on aspects of arts or culture that interest them. As part of this program, we are implementing the “Kids’ Fashion Project,” in which children from elementary school age to 18 years create a fashion show under the supervision of fashion designer Hiroko Koshino. Through hands-on experiences such as clothing design and styling, show production, and modeling, the program will generate opportunities for children to enjoy themselves and foster their creativity, based on the familiar concepts of fashion and clothing.
The children will create clothes in children’s sizes (130cm/140cm), on the theme of clothes they themselves want to try making. Pattern-making and sewing will be done by experts and assistants, but the children will be responsible for choosing fabrics and materials, the decorative details etc., completing their clothing items while learning design basics. The finished clothes will be showcased at a fashion show on Sunday, December 1.
