metote-lab implements a variety of projects with the theme of cultivating a natural culture consisting of visual language.
Among these, “Asobiba” is a project which gathers the play and creative “insights” that develop naturally from sign language and visual actions, and also explores methods of playing with visual language through research, workshops, and more.
To further explore play with visual language, Asobiba organizers will hold the “metote Study Series,” a project that touches upon the appeal of sign language.
This time around, the focus is on Classifier-based expression. Sign language contains the grammatical term “Classifiers,” in which different shapes and patterns are expressed and conveyed to the other person using the hands, face (eyebrows, eyes, cheeks, mouth, chin), shoulders, etc. No doubt there are many people who are wondering what exactly Classifier-based expression is.
By studying afresh expression based on Classifiers, which are normally used unconsciously, organizers hope participants will be able to savor the depth of Classifier-based expression, and from there explore new ideas and expression.
Our guest for the first and second sessions is Shizue Sazawa, a sign language expert/ translator.
Why not join Ms Sazawa and other participants in learning more about Classifier-based expression, and experiencing the appeal of rich and creative language together?
