New film preview screening event: “Offline Hours”

Genre:
  • Art Project ,
  • Exhibition / Screening ,
  • Others

KINO Meeting is an art project comprising workshops on filmmaking with people who (also) have backgrounds overseas. Since the project began in spring 2022, people with different backgrounds have taken part in the workshops, exchanged perspectives, and collaborated to create short films. For this event, organizers will hold a preview screening of the new film that has been in production for about a year since spring 2024.

The title of the film is “Offline Hours.” The film is a three-part omnibus movie portraying a small decision made by each different character working in a city office late at night. The film was created over a year by fifteen project members with different languages, cultures, and levels of filmmaking experience, who took turns in the roles of scriptwriters, actors, directors, production designers, and cinematographers.

The event will consist of a screening of the main feature “Offline Hours,” the “behind the scenes” movie with on-location footage, and a post-screening talk by the production members. Additionally, the morning session will feature screenings of past film works which resulted from KINO Meeting initiatives in the lead up to actual production.

How did people from different backgrounds communicate with each other, build collaborative relationships, and create a single film together? We hope that this overview of KINO Meeting project initiatives from past to present will provide visitors with the opportunity to think about the communication and the possibilities for creative expression generated when people create something together.

*Please note event details are subject to change.

Program

Screening of past film works 10:00-12:00 (visitors are free to come and go as they please)
For the KINO Meeting project, we develop different “methods” concerning the creation of atmosphere/setting and cinematic expression and run workshops based on these methodologies, so that people with different backgrounds can collaborate on filmmaking in a proactive and engaged way.
The screening of past film works will comprise short films created by workshop participants based on methodologies implemented during past workshops.

Screenings
Method “Cinema Portrait”
Project participants walk through the city, recounting episodes concerning their own background
Method “KINO-Logue”
Participants reconsider their own daily lives and those of other people from three perspectives
Method “Cinema Etude”
Participants create a fictional work based on their own experiences

*Details on each of these methods as well as other methods used can be found on the Reports page of the KINO Meeting website.

New film preview screening event 13:30-16:00 (door open: 13:00)
Starting with an introduction to the KINO Meeting project, this event will comprise screenings of the film “Offline Hours” as well as the “behind the scenes” movie, followed by a post-screening talk with the production team members.
