(Re)reading Tokyo

For the event “(Re)reading Tokyo,” Yu Morishita of memu earth lab and Akihide Saito, an artist who has created works based on research into Tokyo’s waterfront areas, joined us for discussion about the potential in Tokyo for attempts at “rereading,” and what might motivate people to engage in inquiry and exploration in everyday life.

This three-day event will offer the opportunity to introduce the trials and processes involved in the experimental “rereading” of NAKACHO House, through comparison between objects as well as through video and talks.
What are the possibilities for practicing “rereading” in a place like Tokyo? We would like to ponder this question together with event visitors.

“Rereading”: this is what we call the act of looking at objects in front of you, reconsidering the things you take for granted, and reexamining their relationship to you. This is a project taking place at memu earth lab based in Memu, in the Tokachi district of Hokkaido. At memu earth lab, we attempt to “reread” a variety of things, including natural objects, animals, buildings, and tools.
