Since 2013, Arts Council Tokyo has been running Creation Grant [Long Term] providing up to three years of support for long-term artistic projects.
For the 18th talk session with a past grant recipient, we introduce “Collaborative theater project with non-native Japanese speaker” by chelfitsch, a project which received a three-year grant starting in 2020.
“Collaborative theater with non-native Japanese speaker” is a three-year project aimed at taking a critical look at the situation surrounding the diversity of language itself, and through the creation of theater, presenting the societal possibilities of theatrical expression. In the first and second years, chelfitsch conducted research on domestic educational institutions and related organizations, held talk events, and organized a series of “imagination”-based workshops targeted at non-native speakers of Japanese. In the third year, it staged “The Window of Spaceship ‘In-Between’,” a theatrical work created with actors whose mother tongue is not Japanese who the group met through the workshops. In order to more broadly communicate the significance of this project, chelfitsch released “chelfitsch note,” comprising an introduction to the project by participants from workshops held in the first and second years, and a report on workshops conducted by external directors.
