DEVIATE.CO presents SAMON, performed and choreographed by Norihito Ishii in Tel Aviv in September in response to an invitation received from the Suzanne Dellal Center for Dance and Theater in Israel to Japan Dance Week: Nights of the Rising Sun, the center’s project to commemorate its 25th anniversary.
SAMON, ripple marks, is the underlying concept of Ishii’s work and is metaphorically connected to live flesh in modern society, and madness and Eros that dwell in the flesh. Ishii used the concept of ripple and universal beauty throughout the performance in a way that leaves a rough feel of ripple marks in the viewer’s hearts. The performance consisted of three elements: the physical energy mass that comes from dancing to melodic lines like street dancers, three-dimensional physicality represented by contemporary dance, and energy that seeps from a dancer’s body.

Norihito Ishii began street dancing at 17, and launched his dancing career on stage in 2006. While performing for many different dance companies, he also performed in plays by Yukio Ninagawa and Amon Miyamoto. In 2010, he joined Sankai Juku, and has performed in a wide range of pieces since.
In 2012, while performing for Sankai Juku, Ishii established DEVIATE.CO, a company where young performers could learn and develop, and where he could curate and support artists and creators. Besides planning dance performances, his projects are designed to familiarize the public with a wide range of performance arts and to revitalize local communities through the company’s activities.
Ishii is known particularly for his works Hear the Voice of Tanatos! and SAMON, for which he received the 2013 Seoul International Choreography Festival Jury Prize.
