KENTARO!!, a choreographer/dancer who has gained fame in recent years for his use of hip-hop to pursue the possibilities of physical and musical expression, will be doing his first new solo performance in 14 months. He will be performing at the Theatre Tram as part of The Setagaya Public Theatre’s “Dance Series Vol. 21,” a series which has introduced some of the top contemporary dancers in Japan. It will be a long-run solo performance on 20 stages, including one in Kyoto.
Born in 1980. He uses dance techniques like hip-hop as a base for his own unique style and mode of expression. He writes his own songs, then gives them a vague synchronization, so that his dances tell stories without the architecture of a story.
In 2008 he won the “French Embassy Prize for Young Choreographers” at the Yokohama Dance Collection R, and the Toyota Choreography Award 2008, as well as the Audience Prize, and the Next Age Choreographer Award. He has also won the “Japan Dance Forum Award 2010”.
He has received multiple invitations from overseas, and continues to aggressively pursue opportunities both in and outside Japan.
