At Nippon Connection, a Japanese film and culture festival held in Frankfurt in Germany, silent films will be shown accompanied by benshi live narrators (also called katsudo-benshi) and a live orchestra performance. Standalone live performances will be given at the festival’s opening and closing reception parties by the Otowaza ensemble.
Otowaza is the only ensemble in the world that performs a musical accompaniment to katsudo-benshi-narrated silent films on traditional Japanese musical instruments only. By using just Japanese musical instruments, the group performs a wide range of music that goes beyond the boundaries of traditional Japanese music, from classical to popular and songs from anime. The ensemble provides live musical accompaniment for not only silent films but also for a variety of theater performances and events.
