Outline

This performance is a revival of a piece staged in Tokyo and Osaka in 2016. It provoked a strong reaction when first performed, with many theatergoers calling it the troupe’s best work. Two years on, company members hope to hone their skills in their long-awaited and first-time four-city Japan tour, which starts in Tokyo and goes on to Osaka, Sendai and Fukuoka.

Set in the troupe’s native Kansai region and written in Kansai dialect, this ensemble drama encompasses the everyday lives of people living in rural areas and a protagonist who yearns for Tokyo, offering a shared opportunity to think about Tokyo in relation to other regions with the many Tokyo residents born elsewhere in Japan, as well as local audiences in cities on the tour.

It is also a performance that appeals to contemporary Japan to “live by art,” in a society in need of reform to the working environment.

Profile

Theatre Company Kodomokyojin

Kodomokyojin is a theatrical troupe formed in Osaka in 2005 by brothers Takashi and Kanji Masuyama. The entire company moved its headquarters to Tokyo in 2014.

This comedic company combines Kansai-style energy with meaty storylines. Its performances focus on human foolishness and frustration in surreal and whimsical settings, delivered with black humor.

The group gives performances in cafes, galleries, live music venues etc. as well as theaters; and through its co-performances and borderless activities it explores the possibilities of theater without constraint.
