With many invited improvisational musicians who perform internationally, Ftarri Festival provided an opportunity to experience in an intensive way the diverse range of performances that form today’s improvisational music scene. Focusing on approaches to composed music, the two days at the venue sonorium consisted mainly of composed works performed by improvisational and contemporary classical musicians. On the two days at the venue BUoY, on the other hand, the programs provided opportunities to enjoy a wide range of improvised music styles. Additionally, small-scale concerts by musicians from overseas were held on four days in the intimate performance space Ftarri. The musicians who appeared in Ftarri Festival include Michael Thieke, Kai Fagaschinski, Margareth Kammerer, Biliana Voutchkova, Magnus Granberg, Dante Boon, Cristián Alvear, Klaus Lang, Samuel Dunscombe, Johnny Chang, Carl Stone, Ryoko Akama, Satoko Inoue, Otomo Yoshihide, Sachiko M, Junji Hirose, and Kazuo Imai.
In April 2008, we held the first Ftarri Festival at the venue SuperDeluxe in Nishi-Azabu, Tokyo. In September 2010, we presented Ftarri Doubtmusic Festival jointly with the label Doubtmusic, again at SuperDeluxe. In August 2012, we presented the concert event Ftarri Opening 2 Days to commemorate the launch of the CD shop/performance space Ftarri in Suidobashi, Tokyo. In November 2015, we organized Ftarri Festival at SuperDeluxe once again.
