Outline

Nikikai New Wave Opera Theatre is a series held once every three years featuring performances by young singers no more than three years out of the Nikikai Opera Institute, and music by the New Wave Baroque Orchestra, Tokyo, which was newly established in 2015. This production concentrates on an opera by Handel. With large-scale productions of baroque opera a rarity in Tokyo, the series has attracted attention among not only Early Music lovers, but has also proved popular among classical music fans in general. Along with the musical performance by the orchestra, led by Hidemi Suzuki, one of the highlights is the opera directing debut of acclaimed dancer and choreographer, Yo Nakamura. This performance features not only many dance pieces by dancers who are longtime collaborators with Nakamura, but also showcases a lot of choreography by the young singers, who spent a long time in workshops and blocking rehearsals, producing a distinctly fresh staging.
