Outline

Many people feel affection and nostalgia for the children’s song “Yuyake Koyake,” which next year celebrates its 100th anniversary. As a pre-event for the anniversary, the Yuyake Koyake Music Festival themed around the famous song was held at its spiritual home, Yuyake Koyake Fureai Village, in order to create opportunities for diverse people including those with disabilities and the elderly to connect with each other. It was an unconventional music festival featuring a variety of performers made up of schoolchildren, students, citizen groups, corporations and artists united by the festival’s vision, and blending a similarly unconventional program of entertainment that included everything from the traditional otedama game using small colorful beanbags, magic tricks, and sign-language-accompanied dance to performances with Japanese instruments such as the shamisen, wadaiko drum and bamboo flute, as well as stalls introducing the activities of people from facilities for the disabled. Festival staff and the different groups including the performing artists worked in cooperation with each other, making preparations, setting up the venue, handling the sound system, and running festival operations.
