Profile

Tokyo Sinfonietta
Tokyo Sinfonietta was founded in 1994 with the aim of directly engaging with creations by currently active composers and introducing contemporary music through excellent performance. As well as subscription concerts in Tokyo it has participated in various music festivals in Japan. It is highly rated not only in Japan but also overseas. Starting with performances in France and Germany in 1996, the group has also appeared at the world’s major contemporary music festivals. In 2012, it received a second invitation from Radio France, for which it introduced works of different nationalities and aesthetics in its broadcasted performances. So far, the Sinfonietta has worked with pieces by more than 140 contemporary composers, commissioned new pieces from 17 composers of different ages, and performed them as world/Japan premieres. “Tokyo Sinfonietta the 28th Subscription Concert Focus on Joji Yuasa” won the 10th Keizo Saji Prize. In 2013 the CD “Ten-nyo-Sanka – TOKYO SINFONIETTA plays Akira NISHIMIRA-2 / THE WORKS OF AKIRA NISHIMURA” won the Record Academy Award (Contemporary Composer category), and its performance in 2015 at the 84th Music Competition of Japan garned it the Competition Committee Special Prize.
