Vayeda brothers’ World of Warli painting “ANCIENT FOREST”

  • Organization : Non Profit Organization Wall Art Project
  • Section : Artistic and creative activity in Tokyo
  • Type of Grant Program : Single
  • Art Forms : Visual Art / Media Art

Outline

This project entailed Warli painting workshops given by the Vayeda brothers (A), public creation of murals (B), and live painting with Yusuke Asai (C). The (A) component of the project took place at three venues, including four sessions at Tsomoriri Bunko in Chofu City. For the workshops, a lecture on Warli people’s culture by the Vayeda brothers was delivered via video and exhibits, deepening understanding of Warli painting; and utilizing the essence of Warli painting, the brothers each created Warli paintings on the theme of nature in everyday life based on the title “Ancient Forest.” The workshops were also held at Fuchu 4th Elementary School (60 students) and Fuchu 9th Elementary School (71 students). The (B) component was carried out from August 19 through September 5 on walls at the Tsomoriri Bunko. The many visitors facilitated two-way communication with the artists. Yusuke Asai’s live painting for the (C) component generated the sort of artistic evolution unique to collaboration: for example Asai used charcoal, a material never used before by the Vayeda brothers. The creation process was live-streamed on Instagram, including a talk while the artist worked.

Profile

Wall Art Project
Since 2010 Wall Art Project has held the international art event Wall Art Festival (WAF) in rural India and at schools in Japan. Through artist-in-residence programs and workshops, the festival has produced insights into everyday life and shaken up realities considered the norm, bringing out change in each person involved. Project organizers believe that using art as a medium to scrutinize the place and environment of one’s upbringing and engender a healthy sense of identity will increase the number of citizens able to feel self-worth and accept others, bringing about a society where diverse values can coexist.
