Outline

Traditional folk entertainment is an irreplaceable part of regional culture, and its continuance and development are one of the challenges faced by local governments. Entwined with the Tama River, the biggest symbol of the Tama region, Tama River basin local authorities Fuchu City, Chofu City, Hino City, Komae City, Tama City, Inagi City, Kosuge Village and Tabayama Village work together to hold the Tama River Basin Folk Performance Festival, in which traditional folk entertainment groups compete. The aim of the event is to promote exchange in the river basin area in the hope of revitalizing each local government.
The 2023 festival featured a total of eight performances: Hayashi by Fuchubayashi hozonkai Shinshukushibu; hayashi by Chofushi kyodogeinou matsuribayashi hozonkai Kamifudahayashiren; hayashi by Hinoshi matsuribayashi hozonkai; ohayashi by Iwado hayashi hozonkai; wadaiko by WADAIKO SEISEKI KOOU; hayashi by Aoibayashi-hozonkai; Kagura by Konagatajindaikagura hozonkai; and shishimai by Tabayamamura bunkazai hozonkai.

Tama River Basin Folk Performance Festival Executive Committee
The Tama River Basin Folk Performance Festival Executive Committee was established principally by the Ikadarace jikkouiinkai in order to strengthen exchange between Yamanashi Prefecture’s Kosuge Village, Tabayama Village and Okutama Town; exchange that took place via the Komae summer institution of Komae Ancient Cup Tama River Raft Race in 2000, the 30th anniversary of Komae becoming a city.
In addition to showcasing and introducing folk performing arts that leverage the unique characteristics of each participating municipality, the Tama River Basin Folk Performance Festival also exhibits special local products/specialties from each region with the aim of conveying the appeal of the area.
