Reading and performance "The Tale of Genji" Wakamurasaki

  • Organization : HanProject Inc.
  • Section : Artistic and creative activity in Tokyo
  • Type of Grant Program : Single
  • Art Forms : Music

Outline

Themed around a part of “The Tale of Genji” (written by Murasaki Shikibu in around 1000), Chizuru Fukuhara put music to components of the novel including waka poetry, did a reading of her own script, and combined this with an adapted performance. She also proactively leveraged traditional Japanese performance techniques.
The performers have a foundation of artistic expression in the traditional performing arts, classical music, etc., as well as the will to innovate and update based on the work and achievements of those who have gone before. This event brought together musicians from different fields who collaborated with painters using visual expression, with the aim of creating new value in the performing arts.

Performances by: Chizuru Fukuhara (Reading, Chanting, Kotsuzumi, Hira-daiko, Shimedaiko, Gong, Shamisen, etc.)/ Shinma (Taisho-koto)/ Shunsuke Ohguchi (Piano, Accordion, Sampling material of field-recorded sound sources, etc.)/ Akiko Nakayama (“Alive Painting” is a live painting technique developed by Nakayama in which she uses flowing liquids to create paintings which are projected onto a screen at the back of the stage.)
