Organized for the purpose of giving visitors from Machida City and beyond a taste of the city’s history and culture, the first event, Machida Jidai Matsuri 2010, was held in October that year. Festivalgoers are treated to the sight of a “Jidai Parade,” in which participants in traditional costumes such as armor and kimono make their way around the neighborhood, as well as traditional skills such as hojutsu (the art of gunnery), iai (the art of drawing a Japanese sword), and yabusame horseback archery. Also popular with foreign visitors to Japan, the Machida Jidai Matsuri provides one of the few locations in the Kanto region where iai sword-drawing, hojutsu, and yabusame can all be seen in one event.
