2024 Kirizaki Tsurujo Zashikimai Italia Tour

  • Organization : Kirizaki Japanese Classical Dance Academy & Associates
  • Section : International project
  • Type of Grant Program : Single
  • Art Forms : Japanese Traditional Art

Outline

This two-pronged project focused on implementation in Japanese language course classes at universities, as well as zashikimai dance and body movement workshops aimed at the general public. All program admissions were free, and as near to the everyday life of the Edo and Meiji periods as possible, featuring live performances of jiuta and sangen, dances in traditional Japanese white makeup, hair styles, long-trained kimono, etc. The project was unique in that all events aimed at the public were conducted in Italian, except for the jiuta. The performances included traditional dances of various styles and backgrounds, as well as a Q&A session, a body movement workshop in Italian, and a “Sakura Sakura” dance experience. By engineering more time to interact directly with audiences, organizers were able to convey the appeal of Japanese culture on a deeper level.

The program was as follows:
“Nagoya-obi” (tsuyamono dance of romance) Dance: Kirizaki Tsurujo
“Matsu-zukushi” (otokomai male dance/celebratory dance) Dance: Kirizaki Tsurumaru, Suzujo/song and sangen playing: Kirizaki Tsurujo, Tsurumaru, “Tama-tori” (dance based on Noh) Dance: Kirizaki Tsurujo, recording of song and sangen by Nao Ohara.

Profile

Kirizaki Japanese Classical Dance Academy & Associates
A corporation organized around Masters of Mai (Natori)of the Kirizaki Jiuta-Mai Academy and supervised by Kirizaki Tsurujo, who studied under Kanzaki Hidejo, who was apprenticed to Kanzaki Hide and Yamamura Taka.
We believe that performing in a zashiki tatami room has influenced all aspects of Jiuta-mai and Kamigata-mai; the name “Zashiki Mai” is used to emphasize the importance of the atmosphere of a zashiki tatami room.
The purpose of the organization’s activities is to get as close as possible to the essence of the Edo and Meiji eras in which the choreography was created, as well as to research, communicate, and share this with a variety of people, leading to new discoveries
