Outline

The Tokyo return performance of the android opera “MIRROR”, composed and produced by Keiichiro Shibuya, was held under the title “ANDROID OPERA TOKYO”. This large-scale theatrical production, first performed in Paris in 2022, featured an android, an orchestra, 1200-year-old Buddhist chants, Shibuya’s piano and electronic music, visual, and lighting.
The first part presented excerpts from the opera “Super Angels”, which premiered at the New National Theatre Tokyo in 2021, with 30 children involving the inclusive choir White Hands Chorus NIPPON and a visually impaired violinist. AI-generated visuals on the screen by Yuma Kishi and costumes by HATRA were also featured.
In the second part, “MIRROR,” the android “Alter 4” was the vocalist, with four Buddhist chant performers from Mount Koya. French artist Justine Emard created the visuals. The orchestra was led by concertmaster Tatsuki Narita, who is one of the top musicians from classic to contemporary music. A total of 180 performers and stage staff, including numerous interdisciplinary artists and technicians, collaborated on this production.
