What we do

Community music now and in the future 2023

  • Organization : Monten
  • Section : None
  • Type of Grant Program : Single

Outline

This project is undertaken with the aim of understanding what community music is from a two-pronged approach of theory and practice, and of sharing ideas and thoughts on what constitutes community music with as many people as possible involved in this field, including artists, those in management positions, people working in welfare and government etc.
For the practical component, using the “Uta-no-Sumu-Ie Project” as an example we experimented with artists in multiple fields such as musicians and choreographers, working together to facilitate a workshop. In addition to the workshop, we held a mini concert in which workshop participants joined us in presenting creative works, and a symposium to examine events that occur in practice and to exchange opinions.
Workshop instructors: Tamami Yamada (choreographer), Sokkyou Karamēru Dan (Miki Akahane & Keiko Masaki)
For the theory component, guest lecturer Jess Abrams, a community musician from the UK, discussed examples from UK, and we held a lecture in which we considered the future of community music in Japan.

Lecturers: Mari Shiobara, Jess Abrams, Miki Akahane
Moderators: Miki Akahane, Mari Shiobara, Mami Tanaka
Project planning: Monten, Miki Akahane
Production: Yaeko Kurosaki

Profile

Monten
After its opening in 1989, Monnaka Tenjo Hall staged an ambitious and varied program of music and performances with the aim of offering a high-quality experience of art and fostering a broad audience base, oscillating between the two poles of “tradition and modernity.” In 2013 it moved to Ryogoku and changed its name to Ryogoku Monten Hall to reflect its standing as a new art space. The venue operates by leveraging partnerships with artists from various genres and local communities. It creates new forms of culture by constantly holding experimental events.
