KENSHU-KAI comprises three members: the Fue-kata Manabu Takeichi, the Kyogen actor Yasutarou Yamamoto, and the Waki-kata Hirosi Obinata.
The group organizes performances on the basis of occasional self-scrutiny followed by the selection of performers and pieces it feels it should stage.
In this third performance in the series, the program consisted of “Tatuta,” the Kyogen“Nawanai,” and the Noh “Sumidagawa.”
This performance was originally slated to be held in 2021 but was canceled due to the state of emergency declared by the Japanese government; this performance is what you might call a “revenge performance” with almost the same program and cast of performers. For both the performers and the audience who had been due to attend the canceled performance, it was a long-awaited event that managed to prevail over the coronavirus pandemic. It was a meaningful performance that met the expectations of the audience, and also demonstrated to both Noh insiders and the world at large the extent to which the individuals involved had worked tirelessly toward the event. It was a performance that aimed to provide the opportunity for each member to exhibit a resolute stage presence that had gotten stronger even with the cancellation of the production, and to move on to even greater heights; this in turn has led to the further promotion and increased appeal of not only Nohgaku but also other artistic and cultural activities and events.
KENSHU-KAI
Hirosi Obinata, Yasutarou Yamamoto, Manabu Takeichi were fellow students on the National Noh Theater’s “Sanyaku yosei” (three training programs in Nohgaku(waki-kata[supporting actor], hayasi-kata[musician] and kyogen-kata[kyogen actor]). The three formed KENSHU-KAI in 2016 with the aim of giving performances that would serve as inspiration for them to further refine and improve their skills. Group members make great efforts in daily performance and rehearsal, holding a performance approximately once every two to three years to assess the fruits of their efforts.
