Outline

To mark the first anniversary of its founding, Tokyohayashijuku Specified non-profit corporation held a performance to showcase the maturing talent of its students. The first part comprised the simple musical accompaniment of “Bamboo and Wisteria” and a workshop introducing hayashi instruments, with audience participation in the form of rhythmic clapping and traditional hayashi “kakegoe” shouts and calls. In the second part, junior high and high school students performed the folk tale “Momotaro” with a combination of rich theatrical expression and Japanese traditional musical accompaniment in a representation of diversity in the form of the traditional with the innovative, the classical with the modern, its blend of adults and young people. The traditional tale of “Kaguyahime” was expressed through creative sand art and a piece created from scratch, exploring new possibilities for Japanese traditional musical accompaniment.
