This music festival weaves a relationship between the theater and the community by fusing improvisational music and art performance. Produced by Koichi Makigami, Hiromichi Sakamoto, and Kiyoto Fujiwara, the festival features a one-of-a-kind lineup of leading musicians from Japan and abroad, and is not limited to the theater, but also includes performances in parks and in front of train stations in a tiny theater called”Jazz Byobu”and programs for parents and children to enjoy together. The city of Sengawa is decorated with improvised performances and art. This year’s festival featured a 40th anniversary performance of John Zorn’s game piece”COBRA”,a special collaboration of “Sparrow Tears”,which boldly arranged Japanese folk songs with Balkan and Tuvan music, and live painting by Shiriagari Kotobuki, among other unique and stimulating programs. The event was a great success.
