Outline

The exhibition “New Japanese Photography” was held at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York in 1974. Regarded as “the first attempt to present an extensive survey of contemporary Japanese photography outside Japan,” this exhibition has had a major and long-lasting impact on the study and understanding of Japanese photography overseas to this very day. To mark the 50th anniversary of this historic exhibition, new exhibitions have been curated. The curatorial team includes Bunmei Shirabe Miyuki Endo, Mika Kobayashi, Marc Feustel, and Sandra Phillips. Together, they aim to shed new light on Japanese photography.

The featured artists include Ryoji Akiyama, Yasuhiro Ishimoto, Tetsuya Ichimura, Ken Ohara, Kikuji Kawada, Bishin Jumonji, Akihide Tamura, Hiromi Tsuchida, Shomei Tomatsu, Ken Domon, Masatoshi Naito, Ikko Narahara, Masahisa Fukase, Eikoh Hosoe, Daido Moriyama, Eiko Yamazawa, Toshiko Okanoue, Toyoko Tokiwa, Tamiko Nishimura, Hitomi Watanabe, Toshie Imai, Sayaka Uehara, Shingo Kanagawa, Gang Mesun, Natsuki Kuroda, Motoyuki Shitamichi, Kohei Fukushima, Mayumi Hosokura, Fuyuhiko Takata, and Keijiro Kai.

【TOKYO INSITUTE of PHOTOGRAPHY】
The organization’s activities are based on three pillars: educational projects, AIR projects, and local cultural projects. The educational project is the “T3 STUDENT PROJECT. The project features portfolio exhibitions by students selected from 14 universities across Japan.
In addition, as an AIR project, T.I.P operates a residency program in collaboration with an overseas photography organization. The program connects domestic photographic networks with overseas human resources to create cultural exchange.
Finally, the T3 PHOTO FESTIVAL TOKYO is held as a cultural project to foster photographic community.
